The term “restorative dentistry” is the integrated management of oral health problems and restoring of the mouth to a functional and esthetic state.
The goal is to preserve as much tooth structure as possible while replacing missing tooth structure with fillings, crowns, bridges or dentures.
There are usually two types of restorative procedures; Direct and Indirect
Direct procedures usually involve placing a filling material when a tooth has been prepared due to a cavity. Our office uses composite or ‘white’ fillings. The reasons are many-fold, however the main purpose is to preserve as much tooth structure as possible while using a superior material in terms of its ability to bond to tooth structure. Some of our materials also release fluoride, thus providing long term cavity prevention benefits.
Indirect procedures usually involve more than one visit, as it would be with a laboratory fabricated restoration. This typically comprises crowns, onlays and inlays to name a few.
